Maria, Molly, Trish, Kristin, and Me

As a child, I was very fortunate to have life-long friends; thinking that when we would all grow up we would be friends forever, never growing old or sick of each other.  Sadly, one of these friends has passed on in her life, but hopefully she will be fondly remembered here.

Not a day passes that I don't remember spending time with Molly, Trish, Maria and Kristin.  We did so many cool things together.  Age did not mean anything to us when we were all younger.  Kristin was five years older than me, Molly was three years younger than me, and Trish and Maria were the same age, about four years younger than me.  But still we had so many adventures.

I have already spoken about the Three-Headed Tree, the Bush, and the Big Rocks, but we did a lot of role playing as well.  One of our favorite role-playing games was to play the "Dukes of Hazzard". It was a TV show which aired on television when I was younger.   We were not Gender Specific when we were younger.  I was always Duke, Molly was Beaux, Trish was Daisy, and Maria was the Sheriff. Kristin was "too old" to play "Dukes of Hazzard"-I will mention her later.   Anyway, we would run around the yard always running from Sheriff, Maria.  But she stayed busy, always talking to Daisy.  We, Beaux and Duke only knew about their secret rendezvous when we would circle back and spy on them.

Maria, would say, "I don't know why I always have to be Sheriff.  It is not fair. How come I cannot be Daisy?  She was the prettiest.  But, I am glad that you are Daisy, Trish, because you are skinny and so beautiful!"

Trish, of course, was a great sport and would respond, "Oh, Maria, you can be Daisy while Duke and Beaux are running away from you and you are here with me.  I will pretend to be Beaux so that you and I can stay together always." Maria would agree and give Trish a hug.  But then we, the "real" Duke and Beaux would hone in on them and start picking on Sheriff again.

Once I realized Maria was sick of being the Sheriff, after about 3 months role-playing this game, Kristin came up with a really fun game called "Jail Break"  That was like playing "Cops and Robbers" combined with "Hide and Seek".  Someone would count by ones to 200 out loud while the others would hide.   The object of the game was not to just seek the people (robbers) out, it was to put them in jail.  Only the "cop" that put all the "robbers" in jail was victorious and the game would start over.  Of course there were variations to that game.  If we had a lot of robbers there were two cops.

Well, the one time I remember us taking it literally was when the neighbor boy wanted to play the game as well.  However, he wanted to actually be tied to the tree, as he said. Well, our property bordered the Country Club Golf Course and this golf course had lovely trees for tying up prisoners. The only way that our tied-up prisoner could escape is if someone were to sneak up while we were out hunting other robbers and break them out of jail.  Little did we know that this neighbor boy had another brother, who when we would go looking for Kristin and the others, came to untie his brother from the tree and reversed the knot on Molly.  She was the other cop that day.  Yes, this made the game more interesting, because the criminal was free and the cop was tied to the tree.

Molly was screaming, "Help me! They tied me to the tree!"  She was yelling, screaming and growling at these boys who were a lot older than us.  Kristin tried to help, but found it more effective to go get help at home.  I tried to free Molly by trying to beat up the boys.  They just laughed at me.  I demanded them, "You untie her! Let her go!  Okay the game is over, and because you cheated, we won!"

"Ohhhhh!  We are sooo scared!" They said, mockingly. "Is the little girl going to hurt us?"
I told them, "You untie her now, or else!"

They ran home.  I thought they would be back. So, I tried to untie Molly.  I could not get the knot out of the rope.  The boys tied her with a secret knot which I did not know how to untie.  Molly was swearing, " I swear I will kill those boys!  Untie me, so that I can go kill them!"  She was so brave!  I would have been crying all this time, but not Molly, she was ready to wring their necks.  Kristin came back and had a knife, she cut the rope to free Molly.

We all ran to the Bush and waited.-It had not been booby-trapped yet.  We saw them come back and saw them look at the rope.  They had ran home to get their Super Soaker-a massive water squirt gun. They were for sure going to hose Molly down.  They knew we had not been gone long, so they started to look for us.

We were so clever to hide in the Bush.  She was so big and hid us well.  Little did we know that they had circled back and went into her "secret" escape hole and started climbing the branches.  We felt water on our shoulders.  "What is that?  Did you feel that?" I asked.  All of a sudden we looked up and saw the boys had penetrated our Fort.  "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!" We screamed. We ran out of that Bush like "Bats out of Hell" and ran home.

Later, I believe our Fathers visited the boys' parents and told them they did not want them playing with us anymore as we were little girls and they were big boys, but it would not have been any fun if that experience wasn't lived at one point in my life.

*** I dedicate this story to Trish, as she has passed on now.  You will be fondly remembered, Tricia Fecteau.  We miss you!***
